Deadlife - Dread Saga
Review by Karl Magi
Overall Album Impressions
Deadlife’s “Dread Saga” is an exploration of industrial terror, noble sacrifice and a world combining the digital and the mythical in one darkly portentous journey into technology and a quest to rid the world of evil. The way in which the elements of legendary heroism and technological shadow come together in the album is fascinating and compelling. I am happy to travel along with Deadlife as he delves into the threat of the digital world and the adventure of a warrior battling all of its darkness.
At the heart of “Dread Saga” are the synth choices that Deadlife makes. Each different tonal and sonic signature is used to emphasize the emotional strength and atmosphere within each piece. The different sounds combine tenderness with danger and tranquility with computerized harshness. All of the different sonic layers mix and mingle to paint vivid imagery and grip me in the world that Deadlife creates. The way in which mood is evoked by different timbres and tone colours is intriguing and keeps me engaged in the listening experience.
Each melody on “Dread Saga” has been crafted by Deadlife to extend the storytelling. The melodies are clear and well composed, moving to draw intense images in my mind and bring up the emotions that surge within each melodic line. I enjoy the continued deepening of the atmosphere by melodic exploration, as the music unwinds and travels through a quest that combines peril and triumph in equal measure. The melodies help me to understand what the tale that is being unfolded is all about.
Another quality of “Dread Saga” that I find enjoyable is the way in which the atmosphere is continually emphasizing the emotions that permeate the music. A feeling of lurking menace and ever-present digital threat is balanced with moments of exhilaration and majesty. All of these elements carry me into the heart of the main character and the battle he faces along the way.
My Favourite Tracks Analyzed
“Handshake” clanks and chugs with mechanical echoes while diffuse, ripping sounds join looming drums that thud with a feeling of doom. Ripples spread outward with warning potency, slicing to a sharp point and fading before cutting again while the metallic sounds behind vibrate and a breeze blows below, a laser sharp note extending with a violent shiver before silence falls.
Industrial noises reverberate into cavernous spaces as “Bureau of the Structural Labyrinth” grows with an enormous weight that becomes a rhythm with pulverising force. Shards of light shatter against it and the immense heartbeat creates drama while surging notes above exude blinding brilliance as the technological, futuristic synth spills a melody which wheels with conviction.
Expanding noises vibrate before the steady foundation creates fearful strength and haunting notes float above it, trailing a ghostly emotional mist. Fragile piano twinkles in contrast to the shattering weight and hissing shadows as chitinous noises crawl. Digital sounds move in the distance with spectral sensations before vocals without words trace a mysterious pattern.
The mechanistic thunder of the low end joins blaring notes that cry out while the enigmatic female vocals hover in the void. A melodic line, feeling ancient and eldritch, flows above the slicing growl of the bass and delicate tones shimmer. Cascading, computerized synth spins out a line full of leaping motion and calculating intensity.
The journey upon which this song takes me is epic and exciting while the choir cries out above an ever-expanding, hammering low end before the robotic voice speaks and more digitized noises expand along with a ghastly shadow. All of the possessed voices drift like disembodied spirits above the smashing underlayer, capturing increasing peril before the song closes.
“Residuals” reaches with slow menace and undeniable tragedy as flitting sounds creep past and blend together before truly Stygian bass snarls with threat and balances the aching tones that glisten. A strangely twisting, sadness-tinged note pattern creates sensations of emptiness and loss before a gliding arpeggio folds me into a blanket of gentler sounds before growing quiet. A vaguely metallic reverberation shivers into space and the track ends.
A carpet of luminosity spills with painful feelings and “Son of Mercia” becomes a nuanced tribute to a hero as lucid notes wash past and trickling tones sparkle with caressing brilliance above an even rhythmic pulse. The drums become powerful as the main melody combines real strength with nobility and distinctive passion before notes with a computerized edge vibrate around them.
As the rhythm gives form, tones trickle, evoking a thousand stars above. Majestic peace permeates me as the music unfolds. A synth bursts with muscled bravery, calling to mind an adventurer facing adversity with strength and courage. A choir-like note pattern generates worshipful sensations as the sweeping notes cry with fierce defiance and the track fades into ringing quiet.
“Violent Grace” hisses into being with a raging underlayer as the undulating melody generates a sensation of lurking darkness while brighter notes create a dramatic contrast and the colliding beat explodes with fierce strength. A sawtoothed rhythm slices, gossamer tones float with a feeling of tranquility and deep contrast to the thickness that growls below before spectral notes carry a melody that drifts like lost souls through an empty landscape.
As the digital sounding tones oscillate, tension permeates me with a sense that something deadly grows near. An ominous pulsation floats and the heaving foundation is joined by a choir of unhallowed voices crying out into the blackness around them. Towering strength is balanced with melancholy chanting and ancient nobility while the radiant notes bloom above the smashing rhythm.
Arpeggios twirl in cosmic smoothness, evoking immeasurable vigor as they float out above quickly lacerating sounds. The main melody slices with, full of unstoppable strength, while colossal beats rebound. Fluting notes move across the gigantic low end before the track breathes out into echoing caverns.
A telephone rings, a modem connects and “I the Deathless” has an electronic beginning, reflective of technological change before the computerized sounds are joined by a jumping rhythm and grunting base which adds crushing weight. More digitized noises tremble as vibrating notes move as the distant voice speaks before the tripping, assaulting drums move with terrifying force and lacerating edges.
Distorted vocals shift as taut, uncomfortable notes drift and the sound of technology joins hovering tones that brush the music with fine tendrils. A tracery of creeping notes trickles and draws me into the mixture of menace and discomfort as the rhythm begins to accelerate. Shuddering weight batters hard while the jagged notes rip into the music and disembodied voices speak along with distorted electronics before silence falls.
“A Tiny Chapel Called Hope” rustles into life with a soft breeze that blows with tiny pinpricks of light, soft as thought and brushing through the music with complete calm. Dark tinges emphasize the growing luminosity as the wind moves as if through the leaves of trees.
A melody rises with deliberate beauty, irradiating the surroundings with a most caressing light. Rain sprinkles as elevated tones evoke stars piercing clouds while the bass rumbles, a reminder of the distant danger that remains. Far away notes are joined by a choir, washing the music in peaceful brilliance as tones broadcast resistance in the face of darkness. Little sparks of light slowly fade out as the track closes.
Tension oozes from the notes that drift into “The Curse of Pattern Recognition” across a background that holds intimidating sensations in check before the short burst of spinning notes floats and fades. A slamming underlayer charges forward with rapid sonic flashes while the moving bass slashes with irresistible strength.
A melody arises from the charging low end, creating a feeling of questing nobility while the pounding weight drives on. A disembodied female voice echoes above the heavy laceration below, leaping in angular lines as shivering notes slip. As the melody flows, I’m filled with sensations of honour and pride, capturing the indomitable spirit of the main character.
The huge underpinnings drop out as piano notes hover before the lead synth broadcasts a feeling of bravery and an ancient floating instrument transmits a melody with timeless feelings. trumpeting notes cry while the low end contributes feelings of continued darkness, balanced with pizzicato strings. As the track comes to an end, the dynamic melody evokes a hero's journey before the music stops.
Conclusion
I enjoy the journey of “Dread Saga” as it unfolds, pulling me into the depths of a strange and unsettling world, outlining one man's quest to fight what lurks there and retain humanity. Each time I listen, I gain new insight into the story and the main character.
