Kal White’s “Paragon” is an intensely textured, melodic and musically layered journey through the adventures of a lone man traveling across the universe on a long voyage to reach home after his battles are won. Kal White weaves together synth sounds to paint gripping images and evoke a deep range of emotional states. When he adds his compositional abilities, the end result is fully engaging and carries me on a cinematic voyage.
Melody is at the heart of “Paragon’s” storytelling, as Kal White composes with motifs that are clear and full of feeling. Each melody suits the mood of its track and draws me further into the story that permeates the music. As each piece expresses a different part of the main character’s evolution, the melodies shift and develop to match those changing facets of the character. The bass moves in spreading lines as the high notes exude faceted light. This is music that draws me in and swirls me away from mundane considerations, leaving me in a state of repose.
A hissing background moves with hushed notes that roam widely to begin “Sevastopol.” Bell-like tones hover with limpid elegance while the underpinnings form an aquamarine pool. From the flaring chords and luscious underlayer, brilliancy begins to emerge with intense strength as the drum beat adds silky resonance.
A sparkling synth transports a melody that paints images of an endless road at twilight. The rebounding drum beat is joined by whorls of sound that slip out with delicate motion. Blurring light moves from the lead synth as the percussion drops away and the notes shimmer with calming sensations.

“Stayin’ Up” opens with crackling static touched by twilit affection, as a far-ranging synth slips out. The drums and bass create a clean heartbeat while a string-like sound cuts in the distance and a panpipe-like synth wafts above.

A metallic synth trembles with blinding light before dynamically charging percussion and striding bass move forward alongside an elevated synth spinning in galactic motion, blurring with astral light.
The galloping rhythm drives onward while a twisting sound pattern cries out above hypnotic, burnished synth carried by tremendous bass. Percussion drops away as nervous sounds vibrate and ringing chimes shift while the bass continues to growl with cosmic force. Arpeggios undulate with cutting lustre while cymbals clash and drums batter as wildly accelerating patterns surge ahead.
A wash of fragile notes contrasts with the meteoric force of the underlayer as it leaps forward. I feel the excitement and thrill of rushing through the atmosphere, battling the unbelievable forces that tear at a reentering spacecraft. The low end remains relentless while string-like sounds glow and the drums strike hard. Gauzy tones briefly move with the rhythm before the track ends on percussive weight.
“Neon Reprise” opens with a vast bass field touched by synth that trails above the portentous heaviness below it. Spectral notes oscillate as the gigantic bass rises and slowly vibrating, razor-like tones move through the music.

The militaristic beat contrasts with a descending synth that refracts luminosity before the regular throb returns.

The rhythm is solid and rebounds with forward motion before trembling notes evoke the soft brush of fingers on skin, reassuring and intimate.
Slow arpeggios ripple like waves of light as higher notes create a prismatic effect and the drums add a gentle pulsation while the main melody unfurls with repose and emotional fulfillment. I imagine the main character finally at rest after his long journey, able to share quiet time with the one he cares for deeply.
