Synth Single Review: “Come Alive” by Anniee
by Karl Magi
Anniee’s “Come Alive” runs lightly over my ears as overlapping voices mix with refulgent notes which blend into a harmonious whole before the steady triphop beat creates a flowing pattern and Anniee’s meltingly tender voice reaches out. A heady combination of caring and concern come together to create protective emotion.
Washing with prismatic tones, the background shimmers as the vocals call for hope in the face of adversity, gliding with hushed delicacy. Production elements come together here to give emotional strength to the showcased vocal performance.
Balanced drums and bass allow the touching fragility and vulnerability of Anniee’s sweetly resonant voice to move me. Vocal layers cascade above extended tones that bend and levitate with velvety ease before the song drifts to an end.
As she asks "where did you go, little rosebud? Where did you go, little girl?" the narrator points out, "you are far too young to lose your petals," but the world is smothering.
The song’s subject talks in her sleep and the narrator queries, "Oh won't you wake up from your sleep?" She wonders what it's going to take for the other person to come to life. In conclusion, she says "I saw you then, I saw you when, once upon a rose."
