Synth Single Review: “DARK EYES” by Shadowrunner

by Karl Magi

Shadowrunner’s “DARK EYES” is an expression of a loving connection. The track opens as faraway sounds drift with uncertainty and gentleness. A rolling bass pulse joins the lyrics, which are expressive and full of wistful sensation. A synth flashes with haunting energy while the vocals echo out into the vast space around them. Complete silence falls for a moment before the beat returns with a steady pulse.

As translucent notes float past like moonlight, the smooth heartbeat slips through the music and open-voiced tones levitate with warmth. I am enamored of the peace and passion within the track. The vocals are full of depth as ghostly tones flicker.

Disconnection and tenderness merge as the song flows through a contemplative passage in which the touching vocals glide past. Entangling notes glisten like distant fireflies while the lead singer’s airy voice moves with stirring emotion and the floating notes eventually fall silent.

As “the sun goes down in the dead of the night,” our storyteller asks the song’s subject to keep her safe and sound, adding, “I see it all in your eyes.” She explains that she used to be scared, but isn’t anymore, because she can “feel you everywhere, you carry me through it all.” She points out that the other person has been “burned into my mind,” and while her hands shake, she can feel “the elevation.” She concludes by suggesting that the other person may have made her braver and asks softly, “Would you be my haven?”
