Synth Single Review: “Filofax (Greed Is Good Remix)” by Rogue FX

by Karl Magi

Rogue FX’s “Filofax (Greed Is Good Remix)” injects a burst of revitalizing energy into the original. Radiant notes ring and intertwine like bright bells while a buoyant low end pulses with dynamic propulsion. Rogue FX’s voice feels distinctive and fresh, attuned to the lyrics as shimmering synth textures bubble with blinding light.

Nasal-sounding tones bend with a faintly haunting quality while the underpinnings propel forward with conviction. Gleaming synth spills outward with a subtle darkness hidden in it as the bass thunders and soft percussion adds a metallic sheen. As the vocals unfold, Rogue FX captures the spirit of the lyrics, drawing me fully into the words.

The underlayer continues its relentless drive while blaring, trumpeting tones leap with exhilarating vitality. A spoken-word segment introduces another emotional layer as higher notes burst with brilliance. Chopped vocal fragments form an intriguing sonic pattern while the explosive foundations surge and the main melody burns vividly.

Synth Single Review: “Toxic” by Hollywood Brown

by Karl Magi

Hollywood Brown’s “Toxic” explores a poisonous desire. The song opens with erupting drums and gnarly bass as an expanding synth surges outward and a fierce guitar slices through the music with commanding force. Hollywood Brown’s voice rings with anticipation while the beat accelerates and the bass coils tightly beneath it.

His performance brims with attitude and a classic rock sound pulling me inward as the guitar vaults upward with raging strength. The underpinnings continue to pound while he captures reckless longing. Slashing guitar notes provide a shredding counterpoint to throbbing drums and reverberant vocals soar above the howling strings as the bass growls below. The energy flooding the track mirrors the wild hunger within the lyrics.

The guitar solo unfolds in a blaze of airborne complexity, flashing with untethered madness while the vocals leap over the slamming beat. By the end, voice and guitar fuse into a wall of muscled force.

Each night as twilight falls, the narrator stares out his window and listens for the song’s subject, her “siren call build up to crescendo.” Her eyes glow like embers as she waits to be invited in. He asks himself, “Am I alive or am I dead?” knowing he may discover the answer before the night is through. “I always, always feel it in my veins. Are you even real, or have I gone insane?”

He knows her love is toxic, yet insists he will get over her. “Got me acting neurotic, it’s all that I can do,” he confesses. She has broken his heart in half; his “obsession is chronic,” but he swears he will move on. As the city lights fade, “I embrace the darkness” and he’s certain he hears her laugh while wondering if she will keep her promise.

Looking toward her, he sees hungry eyes before she drops her disguise. “I can’t see your reflection,” he realizes, trapped between desire and fear.

Synth Single Review: “Teen Movie” by Oblique & Challenger

by Karl Magi

Oblique & Challenger’s “Teen Movie” captures nostalgia and affection in glowing detail. The song opens as rising bass fills the music with dense power while high notes spill prismatic light. Sonja’s vocals glide with whisper-soft ease as pounding drums propel the track with excitement.

Her performance is exuberant, embodying the emotional depth of the lyrics. The continually surging low end creates vibrant dynamism while her velvet voice wraps around me, delivering waves of atmospheric feeling. Elevated tones shimmer alongside the popping drumbeat as thick bass shapes the foundation. Radiance drips from the lead synth while Sonja’s luminous performance drives the song forward.

A brief pause introduces neon-lit tones descending as string-like synth textures slowly encircle me. The vocals turn gentler, tinged with heartbreak, even as the underpinnings press on. Youthful exuberance and wistful feelings intertwine while trumpeting notes carry a melody rich with memory and anticipatory hope. Sparkles drift downward like the last stars fading as dawn begins to glow, strings crying out softly before the track closes.

Like a “flicker in the dark, echoes on the screen,” the storyteller and the song’s subject were “neon hearts in a faded dream.” Each line they delivered felt like the truth, “but the reel runs out and it cuts to you.” He describes them as “silver screens where the truth kept breaking through the moment,” their lives shining blindingly bright, only to disappear before morning.

“The scene rolls on, but you can make it something golden,” the narrator insists, believing the love they are chasing will not fade because “it’s always glowing.” Yet there are “shadows in the frame,” they have forgotten their lines and “every perfect take” is lost somewhere between the moments. “All the silver fades, but the sound remains,” and the song’s subject can still hear his voice “in the static rain.”

As the track ends, the storyteller reflects, “Now the credits roll, but the glow still stays. You’re the endless song that the night replays.”

Synth Single Review: “Summit” by Decisive Koala & M I R A G E

by Karl Magi

Decisive Koala & M I R A G E’sSummit” washes over me in a peaceful tide. The track begins with a steadily pulsing, vibrating synth that moves alongside distant sounds levitating with calm, settling emotion. A rounded tonal pattern floats with disembodied smoothness above the steady trembling below.

The drums form a supportive underpinning while higher notes plane outward with gentle feeling, carrying me along on a current of lulling sensation. The main melody is steeped in honeyed warmth and deep relaxation. Everything grows muffled and misty as hollow drums rebound in the distance.

When the stuttering beat eases back into a smoother pulse, rising notes hover like clouds along the horizon. Tapping percussion brushes against fragile tones that cascade and glimmer, slowly shining like water lapping against a quiet shore. Gilded notes slip through with frictionless grace as the auroral melody pours luminosity into the soundscape, until soft winds fade into static-laced silence.
