Synth Single Review: “In the Chamber” by Color Theory

by Karl Magi

Color Theory's “In the Chamber” commences with a vibrant rhythm and fat, bubbling synth contrasting with the Color Theory's world weary voice and the words which cut like razors. Springy notes pop with effervescence and a warming chorus cascades gently.

The lyrics are transported by Color Theory's hurting tones to create an engaging contrast that takes hold of me. The poppy beat persists while lifting notes spread with worshipful emotion before the piano dances elegantly and the vocals reach out with their distinctive sound. With a slick slide, the synth fades and the song ends with the pained, but strangely hopeful vocals.

Feeling the weight of his heart, "locked and loaded in my chest," the main character talks about the safety being off and then on since the last time the song subject left. His metaphorical gun is "cocked and quiet" as there's a rush of blood into his head while he is "holding this hammer back" as a bullet spins in the chamber.

There's leaden heaviness and icy cold in his heart as our storyteller is "counting down, winding up, body braced for the spark." He reminds himself to take things slow and steady as there are "six rounds left," so he takes a breath, adding that "something has got to give, fracture." He says that what he carries in the chamber, he carries alone.

Aching to tell the song's subject "everything that you don't want to know," the narrator points out that the pressure is "combustible" and he's ready to explode. He says that in the chamber there is "lead inside my veins, somewhere underneath my rib cage, bursting from the strain." He adds that there's fine black dust in the chamber and asks, "Do I ever pull the trigger or just rust away?"

The main character keeps waiting for his chance, musing that perhaps it's for the best and "maybe this too shall pass." To conclude, he says that there are "gripping brass teeth and with one final snap, the world fades to black, silence."

Synth Single Review: “Time Go” by Downtown Binary

by Karl Magi

Downtown Binary's “Time Go” shifts like the ever-changing colours of a twilight sky, flickers of indigo and traceries of pink while fragility permeates each sonic element and fullness rises from a synthesizer moving with a delicate feeling of breath. A heartbeat pounds as individual notes glide like feathers lofted on a nocturnal zephyr. Feelings of detached drifting are shaped by a firm rhythm that provides guidance, adding more dynamism to the overall atmosphere.

Interlocking tones move along with a steadying beat while an open-voiced synthesizer conjures up pictures of stars gleaming through gaps in pastel clouds, lifting me up to that stunning sky. A rising effervescence moves like a curtain of fading light while undulating sounds rock back and forth with soothing feelings. Whorls of colour sweep as shaker percussion and bells contribute texture, a metallic depth vibrating with pure crystal sensation.

Sailing along, resonating notes produce a hypnotic, warming effect before a secondary theme traces like the sinking sun interacting with noctilucent clouds. The underlying percussive pattern adds form while notes swirl in a sliding melodic line, adding to the mesmerizing effect. In the background, tiny notes summon firefly illumination while the main motif is a journey into peaceful thought before silence reigns.

Synth Single Review: “Technological” by Dreamkid

by Karl Magi

Dreamkid's “Technological” flows with rippling tones, tranquil yet melancholy, while the sound of a computer creates a coldly unemotional counterpoint. Rebounding beats add form and the guitar entangles in an effortless slide. Dreamkid's distinctive, affecting voice captures a yearning for real human connection while his guitar gives off need clad in coolness.

Deep hurt cuts into me and transports me into the song’s state of mind, as a synth exhales a calming breath. The rhythm brings strength while Dreamkid reaches for love, finding nothing despite his best attempts.

His guitar solo bleeds with a desire for closeness, unfolding with intricacy and aspiration. A wave of pain and disconnection spills over the underpinnings and the guitar and synth combine in a brilliant line before the song stops.

Speaking to the song's subject, the protagonist asks if they are manmade, if have a "programmed mind design." He talks about the song subjects "pixelated heart, transactional point of view" and says that while he cries, they’re calculating. He points out that the other character will "control alt delete feelings away."

"You're operating while I'm dying, you and your technological love." The main character accuses the song’s subject of "locating hurt souls, feeding them with infected lies." He concludes by describing the secondary character’s "mechanical eyes short-circuiting at any time."

Synth Single Review: “Synthland. The City” by The Pyramid

by Karl Magi

The Pyramid's “Synthland. The City” summons visions of a fantastical city. Shadowy undertones slide in before breezy notes add balance and a rhythm begins to lock into a smooth, guiding motion and the main theme pours out adventurous exhilaration. Strong impressions of flying above a vast, futuristic city grow with a sense of progress and thrilling life before the warm chorus contributes optimism.

Underneath, the sailing rhythm adds shape, while clapping percussion provides clean accents and the main theme calls to me with increasing energy and excitement, painting vivid images of crystal towers and glowing streets.

The chorus is gentle and full of positive sensations while the main melody calls up an emotional rush with scintillating edges and the sliding tonal pattern provides relief and relaxation. Notes are layered with an effulgent illumination while the digitized synth theme climbs with powerful motivation before closing out.
