Six Months Of Superb Synth - Singles Pt. II

by Karl Magi

Here’s part two of my recap of the synth singles that grabbed my ears over the past six months. It was hard to select my favorites out of the plethora of superb music so far this year but I've managed to narrow things down to the singles which made the most impact on me so far in 2026.

“Secrets” by Lovespirals

“Secrets” reveals layers of complex emotion as Anji Lum’s airy voice transmits approaching loss. delicate strumming from a guitar is supported by hushed drums as the  underpinnings guide. disembodied grace trails through, transported on floating synth.

Renewed confidence fills Anji Lum’s voice, capturing me with its assurance. Haunting melancholy is driven by sonorous notes as Ryan Lum’s production adds depth with wandering tones that shift with ghostly lucidity. Roaming with a hazy shimmer, a synth closes the song.

The narrator reflects on her mistakes, regrets her lack of honesty, openness and communication in a troubled relationship. As accusations of secrecy and self-doubt surface, she starts to recognize her own role in the conflict.

“Pretending to Be Cool” by NÆ & Blizz

“Pretending to Be Cool” is shaped into a dazzling blast of synth-pop fun as metallically bouncing percussion drives a rapidly rushing piano along with heavy bass. NÆ chants the lyrics with playful confidence, in a carefree performance, blooming expressively over Blizz’s backing vocals.

A bending synth cries out with a ghostly, computerized shimmer and a  twisty little melody shimmies through with snaky smoothness. Both vocalists sound like they’re having a great time!

Rockets fly, holograms flash and robots act as the song explores the tension between reality and illusion, pointing out that modern life often seems like an elaborate performance.

“Persevere” by Novaclypse & Shred Krueger

“Persevere”  balances incandescence and weight as ghostly tones flicker into the void, reaching a crescendo as chains rattle and the underlayer churns while a xylophone adds organic luminosity. lucid tones trip uneasily over an unsettling rhythm as diamond-edged energy fills the main melody above coiling arpeggios.

A tidal sweep moves as gossamer notes drift as Shred Krueger’s guitar solo unfolds, starting out with a calm smoothness that quickly becomes intricate power,  radiance spills out from the strings as the complex solo vaults, creating action and dynamic strength before the track slowly ripples out into silence.

“World of Promises” by Michael Oakley

“World of Promises” delves into this broken world as a cassette tape spins up as phantom impressions float outward.  Apocalyptic bass shatters against Michael Oakley transmit loss and suppressed rage. as spectral tones trail like the hands of the dead as the vocals burn with warning,

Michael Oakley’s vocals seize me and capture defiance with heart-piercing depth. Dana Jean Phoenix adds warming harmonies as broken crystal tones ring while hypnotic beats batter. A rapid, metallic trembling shifts above pained strings before Michael Oakley carries the song to a conclusion.

Frustrated by the erosion of truth and authenticity, the narrator struggles to make sense of a world that feels increasingly deceptive, fractured and consumed by its own contradictions.

“Teen Movie” by Oblique & Challenger

“Teen Movie” flowers as prismatic light captures nostalgic affection in glowing detail as dense power pours from the underlayers while exciting drums underpin Sonja's whisper-soft vocals. Glistening notes exude tenderness around the velvety vocals, drawing me in with waves of atmospheric feeling. neon-lit tones descend, intertwining with slowly encircling notes, evoking strings.

Heartbroken emotion tinges Sonja’s performance, mingling with youthful exuberance, as polished notes transport a melody rich with memory and anticipatory hope. like the last stars fading as dawn begins to glow, sparkles drift downward, strings crying out softly before the track closes.

Cinematic imagery of fading film reels, silver screens and glowing memories portrays timeless love, capturing emotional resonance that remains long after the moment has passed.

“Going Backwards” by Out Runner

“Going Backwards” draws me into warm nostalgia with a tranquil flow as a cruising beat supports Out Runner’s sailing guitar line while synth-driven impressions of blue light and relaxation take hold. I imagine gazing out over night falling on a tropical bay as Out Runner’s guitar shimmers like a midsummer evening.

Eliciting irresistible calm, the guitar moves like a powerful car sliding down a palm-lined boulevard, reflecting neon light. Evoking  aquamarine water, notes float as Out Runner’s guitar weaves passionate dreams above shaping weight. Serenity exhales from fragile notes and silence falls.

“Penthouse” by Perfect Female Type & Neon Shards

“Penthouse” creates images of an ultra-cool ’80s penthouse with a ripple of pastel-like sound, a guitar cruising in laid-back motion. The sailing guitar draws images of a woman in a sharply cut suit, deep in conversation with a man in his pale white jacket and pants.

Neon Shards and Perfect Female Type nail the mood.  Breathy pan pipes paint an image of lounging on a classic Italian leather chair, watching the city unfold beneath. The bells resemble luminosity spilling from floor-to-ceiling windows, the guitar becomes a chill vibration in space before the music ends.

“Gettin' Heavy” by Power Rob & Fulvio Colasanto

“Gettin' Heavy” spills desire in shadowy tones above heavy beats that fall with slicing bass. Prismatic tones contrast with throbbing power and Power Rob gets hold of the lyrics, creating blazing attraction. Fulvio Colasanto’s feral guitar solo tears with cat-like claws, exuding passionate energy as burning need pours from Power Rob.

All of the unadulterated craving stabs into my heart. A rhythmic pulsation trembles with jagged edges before Fulvio Colasanto’s guitar spills ferocious want before the song closes.

The song blends nervous anticipation with an intense magnetism between two people. Through themes of desire, danger and emotional surrender, the narrator finds himself overwhelmed by a connection that is exhilarating and irresistible.

“Afterimage” by Radical Bicep, Lisa Marie Perkins & Diamond Ace

“Afterimage” explores internal struggle and change, as gargantuan rhythmic heft underlays a subtle phosphorescence. Earnest emotion fills Lisa Marie Perkins’ captivating performance, pulling me in with it. Brilliant sunlight radiates from the chorus above a rhythmic heartbeat

Glistening like thousands of tiny fireflies, synth shimmers before Diamond Ace’s guitar draws images of hope and resilience. He paints a portrait of struggle and resolution with sonic colour and intricacy. Lisa Marie Perkins transforms her vocals into a journey of discovery and emotion before the song closes.

The narrator explores  the universal struggle with self-doubt. Through self-reflection and transformation, the narrator suggests that confronting our personal monsters is part of a difficult but necessary movement toward growth and understanding.

“Running Out of Time” by SynthPrincipal

“Running Out of Time” starts a drifting temporal journey as effervescent lights expand outward with dreamy softness. kicking drums and a knotted bassline support starry glitter, cast across outer space.

Slipping like blurry luminescence, the melody explores hope in spite of the difficulties of modern life. Tender notes capture nostalgic yearning for a future we never had,  evoking youthful imaginings in me.

A galactic sheen unfolds in lightly touching tones before drums create a percussive contrast. Imagery of moving across the unending vastness of space and time radiates from the notes before the song ends.

“Who Will Go For Us?” by Sunset Cassette ’87

“Who Will Go For Us?” is gentle and meditative above a shadowy bass void and a guiding drum pulse. Broad chords glide below iridescent, bell-like notes. Timeless gentleness infuses the melody, tinged with and a hint of mystery as it hovers in a vast bass void.

A diffuse cloud of warming light carries the melody as it refracts diamantine delicacy. The notes grow fragile and tenuous, a thin thread connecting our souls to the world.  Relaxation permeates the track, mingled with melancholy and meditative musing, before iridescent light suffuses the music and silence falls.

“Turbo 250” by Sonic Gap

“Turbo 250” evokes nostalgia and childlike wonder as a rushing sound collides with an explosive beat as blinding radiance leaps forth.  Precise 8-bit chimes add technological illumination while images of adventure in fantastical worlds are conjured by brass-like synth tones. A muscled underlayer surges forward with determined force as 8-bit tones shine like gems.

Dramatic tension scythes from organ-like sounds, supported by coruscating chords that erupt in luminance. Nobility and ancient strength blazes from trumpet-like tones before shimmering tones spill across the soundscape again, drenched in a burning sheen. Serene grandeur radiates from ember-like notes, giving off legendary aura.

“Computer Love” by UFO1982 & Rogue FX

“Computer Love” examines virtual relationships evoked by a precise, technological sounding melody as Oswaldo Gonzalez’s guitar spreads sapphire feeling through a blues-inflected lick. Projecting confident sharpness, Rogue FX makes his vocal presence felt as UFO1982’s crisp synth lines blend with Oswaldo Gonzalez’s graceful melodic line.

An insistent rhythm beats below twisting tones which conjure an unsettling screensaver. UFO1982’s luscious background mixes with Rogue FX’s unique vocals and Oswaldo Gonzalez’s skillful playing, creating engagement for me. A guitar solo unfurls with sunset effulgence before the song sails into silence.

The narrator has grown obsessed with a digital, artificial type of romance, blurring the boundaries between reality and fantasy as technology increasingly dominates his emotions and desires.

“In the Silence” by Valley Lights

“In the Silence” journeys from despair to fulfillment as a synth evokes the darkness between street lights at night. Reminiscent of a lonely car on an empty road, Nightmarepaint’s guitar slides past above a pressing rhythm. Valley Lights vocals move from brokenness to completion. Notes flicker like headlights cutting through the darkness.

Michael Oakley and Missing Words’ production is nuanced and emotive, weaving worshipful gentleness as Valley Lights encapsulates a welter of feeling. Strings add a symphonic quality and Valley Lights’ soulful vocals bring the song to an emotional close.

The narrator feels disconnected from himself and the world. Everything changes when he encounters the song’s subject, who breaks through his isolation and gives his life meaning and direction.

“Lonely Together” by Autumn White

“Lonely Together” glows with phosphorescent tones that exude a melody rich with loving depth, mingling affection and loss. Autumn White’s voice is deep and sorrow-tinged, carrying the affectionate melody with conviction.

Prismatic notes join a weighty rhythm as his voice moves effortlessly from grounded depth to trembling height. Gigantic percussion surges while the vocal performance reaches me with emotive conviction, mingled pain and care.  Laser-like notes flash as limpid tones trickle and caring warmth radiates through his silky delivery.

The narrator imagines a journey beyond the ordinary world, as he asks the other person to leave everything behind with him and wonders if facing loneliness together is better than facing it alone.

“Stay With Me” by Woren, GMNI88, Shred Krueger & Tholos

“Stay With Me” pleads for love as melodic tones carry GMNI88’s sorrow-tinged vocals, luscious tonal patterns ripple outward above expansive chords and drums leap with titanic propulsion. Touching and compelling, the vocals charm me with their quivering emotion.

Like a breeze riffling a still pond, breezy notes exhale below GMNI88’s voice, rising with passion and pain above the foundational pulse. Shred Krueger’s guitar solo delves into loss and burning need with intricacy and impassioned strength.  As the song ends, the vocals fade with tenderness and loss.

Through images of cigarettes, empty glasses and bittersweet tears, the narrator  expresses heartbreak, regret and a desire to hold on to a fading connection just a little longer.
