Synth Single Review: “No Reply” by Lovespirals
by Karl Magi
Lovespirals’ “No Reply” is about breaking toxic cycles. The song begins as waves wash on the shore and a soft piano is joined by floating strings, while Anji Lum’s beautifully gentle voice carries a levitating melody.
Tranquility mingled with mournful emotion is joined by strumming guitar while the drums tick and the background swirls in soft clouds. Anji Lum’s voice wraps around me like a warm blanket despite the hurt within the lyrics. I find myself touched by the depth of pain that’s alleviated once the main character realizes she can be free.
The steady underlayer creates balance while Ryan Lum’s guitar glimmers with sunset light and the flickering piano notes slide with easygoing smoothness. A sense of chilled-out, late-night relaxation is emphasized by Ryan Lum’s nasal-toned guitar, which moves with a velvet flow before the track exhales into silence.
Without any answer or reply, our storyteller is left wondering why the song’s subject has gone silent. She asks, “Should I even bother, give it another try?” because she has spent so much time waiting and wasting her energy.
The narrator questions, “Did you leave me on read just to get into my head?” as she sleeps restlessly all night long. Finally, she decides to break free from the cycle, running in circles “till I starve your ego, block and move on, now I’m free.”
