Synth Single Review: Patti Smith & Bruce Springsteen’s “Because The Night” covered by Anniee

by Karl Magi

Anniee’s cover of Patti Smith & Bruce Springsteen’s “Because The Night” tells of a liberating relationship as sparkling notes are cast out above her echoing voice, repeating as percussion enters the picture. As the beat drifts, freedom and a sense of release swirl from Anniee’s voice, sweet and full of embracing emotion.

Below floating tones like soft billows of mist, guiding beats slip while Anniee creates engagement and captures a fiery yearning that grasps my mind. Von Herzog’s production lends a disconnected ethereality to the cover. Lacy, dappled light emerges from strings that sing and intertwine above velvet shadows and gently shaping drums before the song fades away.

The narrator is deeply drawn to the song’s subject, asking to be embraced completely. She seeks the other person's understanding of their overwhelming desires. For them, the night symbolizes freedom and intimacy.

Love, for our storyteller, is tender and dangerous, blending romance with lust. When they’re apart, she feels lonely and unsure, but when she’s with the song’s subject those fears disappear. To conclude, she wants to seize the present and find comfort and belonging with the other person.
