Synth Single Review: “Penthouse” by Perfect Female Type & Neon Shards

by Karl Magi

Perfect Female Type & Neon Shards’ “Penthouse” paints an image of an ultra-cool ’80s penthouse as it grooves into life below a ripple of pastel-like sound, a cruising guitar levitating in laid-back motion. I imagine slick chrome furniture, black leather and white carpet as the sailing guitar draws imagery of a woman in a sharply cut suit, deep in conversation with a man in his pale white jacket and pants. These are sophisticated cosmopolitans in their element.

Neon Shards and Perfect Female Type nail the mood, guitar and synth layered to capture a cinematic scene. Bells ring to generate uplift while computerized notes evoke the technological complexity surrounding our characters. As tiny notes flicker to create the image of city lights, breathy pan pipes paint an image of lounging on a classic Italian leather chair, watching the city unfold beneath. As the bells evoke luminosity spilling from floor-to-ceiling windows, the guitar becomes a chill vibration in space before the music ends.
