Synth Single Review: “Runaways” by Bonnie McKee & The Midnight remixed by Driver405

by Karl Magi

Driver405’s remix of Bonnie McKee and The Midnight’s “Runaways” plunges in with a beat that crushes with unbelievable strength, its tremendous force a contrast to the original’s more melancholy start. Dominating propulsion speeds like a car escaping through the night, the main melodic line captures wandering emotion, touched by muffled and distorted vocals. Velocity is reflected in rushing rhythmic motion and Bonnie McKee’s swirling vocals, full of overpowering emotion, echoing into broad space.

Percussion taps and accelerates like a powerful engine flinging the car onto the freeway, the speeding propulsion exciting and full of potential. Driver405 makes a sympathetic interpretation of the original, imbuing it with explosive acceleration and undeniable thrill. As nervous tension spills through the synth, winding up to ever more taut levels, the charging underlayer feels unstoppable. An orchestra hit flashes like dawn on the curvature of a sports car’s bodywork.

Bonnie McKee’s vocals are foregrounded, her smouldering expression pouring through an intricately cascading saxophone to add more feeling. Building massively, blurring motion erupts once again from percussive muscle like blinding headlights piercing the darkness, driven into the skyline on a midnight drive. Another blast of orchestral sound gleams while unrelenting force permeates the rhythm and the remix ends.
