Synth Single Review: “The Underlying Tone” by Ferus Melek
by Karl Magi
Ferus Melek’s “The Underlying Tone” slips with galactic bells into a sonic world of spectral sensation, full of uncertain and contradictory feelings. A pattern forms from the splashing notes that tumble over one another in a technological rush, backgrounded by heavy bass shadow. Cleaving edges growl with deadly force, clean rhythms cutting on a snare drum with a feeling of crushing heaviness moving below.
Constant threat is evoked by the combination of diamond-lit tones and broader brass expanding with a feeling of majestic, increasing strength. A welter of emotions spills through me, evoked by the drama and cosmic sensation of the melodic pattern. Extended tonal sweeps slash in serrated motion, supporting the eternally twirling arpeggios, full of dangerous nobility.
Melodic tones create emotion full of growing defiance and the possibility of change, painting pictures of victory rising from darkness. As the track ends, feelings of serenity and triumph combine.
