Synth Single Review: “Last Train to Kyoto" by LightSource
by Karl Magi
LightSource’s “Last Train to Kyoto" creates cinematic imagery as it unfolds. The track flows into existence as a vibrant synth comes together in a sonic pattern that evokes a drifting landscape. The drums, played by LightSource, generate the sensation of rails blurring beneath a speeding train as it moves onward.
The music’s hypnotic nature evokes watching the world pass by from the window beside your seat, creating feelings of contemplation and warmth. The lead synth permeates the track with a sense of calmly enjoying the Japanese countryside as one glides past it. Its luminous tones paint images of sunlight sparkling on a river and the green shapes of distant hills.
Mellowness is a signature of this piece, generating relaxation and trance-inducing motion while LightSource shapes the music with his drums. As deeply resonating tones intermingle, the sense of a continuing journey carries the track gently to its conclusion.
Synth EP Review: “The Great Beyond” by Wings of Fire
by Karl Magi
Wings of Fire's “The Great Beyond” is full of longing, love and fragile emotion as it unfolds with tenderness and hurt. I am compelled by the many talented artists on the EP who bring soul and life to the first rate songwriting.
“Take A Star From The Sky” exhales into being with consummate tenderness, its melody full of affectionate feeling while the underlayer bursts with weighty propulsion. MICIA’s voice wraps me in a flowing, airy blanket as it carries a melody that is intensely yearning and filled with absence. I can feel the aching need and lost hope pour from MICIA’s emotively engaging vocals as string-like notes vibrate with effulgent sensation and the piano flickers.
A reverberant bass drum moves with the wordlessly levitating vocals as the percussion drops away. MICIA captures all of the longing within the lyrics while vibrating chimes exude glassy radiance and entrance the listener. Wind sweeps through the track as the chorus moves with bells that shimmer like tiny sapphires in the firmament. The underlayer continues to guide as the piano trembles and bell-like notes dance above the massive bass before silence falls.
“Faking a smile, secrets were filed, regrets were compiled and lost,” as our storyteller is tossed in the night like her letters that floated away with her. She says that she could “take a star from the sky and I could keep it alive,” but it still would not make the song’s subject hers. She goes on to say, “Some stories never end, did I imagine it all again?” and concludes, “I wondered what it was like to be you, some dreams they don’t come true, it makes me feel so blue.”
Planing notes glide with peaceful smoothness as agile drums and bass rebound to start “Another Green Lawn.” Elisa R’s voice is beckoning and full of remembrance and brokenness, carrying a melody tinged with melancholy. The drum beat and colossal bass lock into a propulsive flow while a synth chimes with beautiful brilliance.
Elisa R’s voice echoes with hurt touched by resolution, moving me with its mingled emotions. The gentleness of the melody contrasts with the vibrating strength below and gleaming bells transmit a feeling of loss while the vocals ring out with brokenhearted sensation. A floating synth bends with delicate luminosity while the drum beat continues to add smooth motion. As the soft notes sigh, the track closes in quiet reflection.
The narrator encourages the song’s subject to come with her, saying, “The path was long and the past is gone, maybe I was wrong again.” She asks the other person to pretend that she is their only friend and that they “will be happy till the end.” She guesses that the mystery is gone and that “it’s just another green lawn,” concluding, “Come on, don’t be scared, the world doesn’t care, the waves can carry us away.”
“Somebody To Love” blooms as a solid kick drum moves with Liliia Kysil’s ethereally drifting voice, carrying a heartfelt and wistful melody. The drums rebound to create a firm heartbeat while Liliia Kysil’s voice is as fine as spun glass, capturing sorrowful need with an immediacy that touches me. The chorus floats with utter ache while the underpinnings guide the track and delicate notes ring like ice chimes as tenderness wraps around me.
Liliia Kysil’s voice contrasts with Nicolo Rossini’s guitar as it flies with brilliance above the heavily rebounding underlayer. Tiny notes levitate like raindrops while whispered vocals trail above flickering light in the distance. Echoing openness fills the background as the vocals create heart-wrenching emotion and quickly rippling tones shiver with fragile intensity. Nicolo Rossini’s guitar and heavy drums add propulsion while the voice eddies like cobwebs in a slight breeze and opalescent tones slip past before the song closes.
Our storyteller tries to be herself while also trying to be the song’s subject, but “there was too much in between to see through.” All she wants is someone to love and someone who believes in her, because “so much comes and goes and nobody knows.” She admits that she does not want to be alone again, “in the throes of something deepest,” and simply wants someone to dream about, concluding “so much for the times I wasted waiting for the signs of someone true and kind like you.”
The guitar sings with an exultant yet touching melody as strings gleam and the drum beat brushes gently to start “Midnight Rain.” Jeremy Schroeder’s bittersweet voice carries a melody that trembles with pain while chimes accent his soothing vocals. Alessandro Maffei's guitar holds the main melodic line, gleaming and sobbing with hurting affection as chiming notes flicker like moonlight.
A string-like synth transmits a melody that blends hope with loss as the chorus slips through with a gliding sensation. Crystalline chimes exude reverent light while rounded tones add calm in contrast to the active drums. Alessandro Maffei's lissome guitar moves alongside the vocals as they slide with heartbroken emotion, bringing the song to a quiet and tender close.
“Once upon a memory, I was yours and we were free, farther than the eye could see,” the narrator reflects, saying he would dig his grave rather than let it go. He adds that love is undying, but “the hardest words are on the inside.” He thought this thing was done, yet realizes it is just beginning as he admits, “I thought if I fixed my lie, I could be someone.”
He points out that someone has to feel the midnight rain and that “the summertime has gone to the other side,” capturing a sense of loss, endurance and emotional reckoning as the story unfolds.
“Blood and Soul” opens as a popping drum beat creates motivational energy while the main melody unfolds with breathless hope. Jeremy Schroeder exhales with warmly emotional feeling as the melody brushes forward with tentative affection. A synth evokes summer nights while the vocals entwine with affecting tenderness and slightly muffled notes glimmer like distant lights.
The chorus flows through the music with breezy weightlessness as the vocals stab me in the heart with their emotional tenor. Bright notes shine like fireflies at dusk while Jeremy Schroeder’s vocal performance carries the weight of love. As the song comes to an end, the melody conveys positivity intertwined with hurt.
As our narrator is tossed aside, he collides with the snow and reflects that “you’re not alone in heaven but it’s a long way home.” He finds something he was dreaming of, yet not the song’s subject, admitting that “the blood still keeps me alive, just blood and soul still keep me alive.” In the closing lines, he pleads, “tell me something that nobody knows, show me some place where no one can go,” capturing longing, endurance and fragile hope.
Kal White - Paragon
Review by Karl Magi
Overall Album Impressions
Kal White’s “Paragon” is an intensely textured, melodic and musically layered journey through the adventures of a lone man traveling across the universe on a long voyage to reach home after his battles are won. Kal White weaves together synth sounds to paint gripping images and evoke a deep range of emotional states. When he adds his compositional abilities, the end result is fully engaging and carries me on a cinematic voyage.
Melody is at the heart of “Paragon’s” storytelling, as Kal White composes with motifs that are clear and full of feeling. Each melody suits the mood of its track and draws me further into the story that permeates the music. As each piece expresses a different part of the main character’s evolution, the melodies shift and develop to match those changing facets of the character. The tracks feel like scenes in a film that knit together to form a cohesive narrative arc.
The synth tones, textures and timbres employed by Kal White work in concert to deepen the atmospheric nature of “Paragon”. Each musical moment is defined by thoughtfully chosen synth sounds that combine to form a tapestry of glistening threads. The way these auditory elements intertwine enhances the storytelling and evokes vivid scenes and emotional states as each track evolves toward the conclusion.
The overall sense of presence in “Paragon” is deeply engaging. I feel as though I am traveling beside the main character on his journey while Kal White paints a clear picture of the events and emotional shifts along the way. This immersive exploration ultimately creates a richly rewarding and emotionally satisfying listening experience.
My Favourite Tracks Analyzed
“Before We Go” commences with the sound of a cassette being rewound and played as a faraway synth creates sensations of disembodied grace. From the lushly cruising underpinnings, a slow rhythmic pulse begins to emerge. Twinkling tones flash with fresh brilliance, clean and pure, as the foundations ripple. The bass moves in spreading lines as the high notes exude faceted light. This is music that draws me in and swirls me away from mundane considerations, leaving me in a state of repose.
A hissing background moves with hushed notes that roam widely to begin “Sevastopol.” Bell-like tones hover with limpid elegance while the underpinnings form an aquamarine pool. From the flaring chords and luscious underlayer, brilliancy begins to emerge with intense strength as the drum beat adds silky resonance.
A sparkling synth transports a melody that paints images of an endless road at twilight. The rebounding drum beat is joined by whorls of sound that slip out with delicate motion. Blurring light moves from the lead synth as the percussion drops away and the notes shimmer with calming sensations.
Bell-like sounds echo mournfully while the background grows with dense bass. Power builds as luminous notes permeate the music and the bass creates massive support. The drum beat sails back in as a nasal-sounding synth trails a melody full of energizing motion, vibrating with life.
The rebounding rhythm guides the music forward as rounded notes intertwine with elevated tones that exude starry radiance. The drum beat launches again while the twirling synth intermingles with the bass to unveil a road that stretches on into glistening moonlight before the song closes.
“Stayin’ Up” opens with crackling static touched by twilit affection, as a far-ranging synth slips out. The drums and bass create a clean heartbeat while a string-like sound cuts in the distance and a panpipe-like synth wafts above.
Vocal sounds call out passionately as the low end continues to add form. Breathy notes hover and the vocals repeat “stayin’ up” while iridescent notes descend. A high, open-sounding synth exhales in a pulsing motion. The groovy low end pushes forward as the vocal sample wanders past and a delicate synth flickers remotely.
Air flows through the track like a summer breeze as a regularly shifting synth vibrates above the guiding low end. The windy sound moves along with diaphanous vocal samples as the bass fades away and panpipe-like notes skim with feathery lightness.
A tremulous sound roams before the drums flourish, leading to an ever-turning synth with a string-like quality weaving through the music. Chiming notes fall and whale-like sounds add deeper emotion. The string-like pulse continues to spin as flaring notes illuminate the music. I am drawn in by the track’s sense of release as it comes to an end.
“paragon” exhales into being as gem-like lights create illumination and crackling static moves with hollow bass, levitating out into open space. Chimes add a diamond sheen while the jazz organ permeates the track with soporific ease and a hazy vocal wanders through the soundscape. Clapping percussion joins chords that erupt in molten brilliance as cascading notes tumble and bass rumbles beneath heavy drums.
Faceted effulgence trickles from the elevated notes while the drums and bass form a gigantic underlayer. Soaring tones trumpet with piercing force as the rhythm locks into weighty motion. The main melody transports me with its flying refulgence while snapping percussion drives the track forward. Trickling notes spill like raindrops as the giant low end presses onward with immense power.
Percussion drops away as female vocals slip in a bittersweet breath and incandescent sounds trail through the atmosphere. Broad synth chords explode with solar illumination while a trumpeting synth cries out with extended notes full of yearning. The colossal foundation supports the solar high notes before the track comes to an end.
An ominous synth towers as hissing sounds flash through to start “Re-Entry.” Reverent notes rise from the threatening, throbbing underlayer as wind moves in a haunting sweep. A metallic synth trembles with blinding light before dynamically charging percussion and striding bass move forward alongside an elevated synth spinning in galactic motion, blurring with astral light.
The galloping rhythm drives onward while a twisting sound pattern cries out above hypnotic, burnished synth carried by tremendous bass. Percussion drops away as nervous sounds vibrate and ringing chimes shift while the bass continues to growl with cosmic force. Arpeggios undulate with cutting lustre while cymbals clash and drums batter as wildly accelerating patterns surge ahead.
A wash of fragile notes contrasts with the meteoric force of the underlayer as it leaps forward. I feel the excitement and thrill of rushing through the atmosphere, battling the unbelievable forces that tear at a reentering spacecraft. The low end remains relentless while string-like sounds glow and the drums strike hard. Gauzy tones briefly move with the rhythm before the track ends on percussive weight.
“Neon Reprise” opens with a vast bass field touched by synth that trails above the portentous heaviness below it. Spectral notes oscillate as the gigantic bass rises and slowly vibrating, razor-like tones move through the music.
The main melody is a long sonic glide, capturing complete harmony above the sweeping underlayer as an even pulsation begins to move with quiet insistence. Hints of a storm pull at the edges of the music, entrancing me with their growing force before the sound breathes back into silence.
Liquid notes create a quiet wave to open “Nakatomi.” Bass grows in forceful lines as the drums burst in and create a solid pulse while ethereal notes leap with dynamism and silken weight. The lead synth has a brassy radiance as it carries a melody full of relaxing vibes, tumbling above the prodigious low end and solid drums. Cascading notes pour out with contemplative luminosity, transporting me with their emotional depth.
Elevated notes shine with all the brilliance of a summer dawn while the drums and bass drop away to reveal a current of sensation that enfolds me in a warm blanket. Polished notes begin to tremble unevenly, creating contrast before the main melody pours out with rich power and the drums flourish. The militaristic beat contrasts with a descending synth that refracts luminosity before the regular throb returns.
The main melody takes on a majestic quality as it cries out and the drums continue to shape the music. A feeling of victory mingles with hushed reverence that glimmers around it while the percussion presses forward. As the drums fall away, the main melody trembles, painting a picture of soul-deep affection before the track ends with the drum beat returning and trickling notes slipping into silence.
“Flatline Miami” starts with sliding notes and otherworldly sounds that travel in an astral wash. A static crackle moves along with tripping notes and chords that expand outward like a single Ripple on a calm sea, where a computerized note pattern begins to spin. The rhythm moves with force while string-like tones intermingle with their futuristic sound.
Tropical warmth permeates the music and fills me with warmth as the main melody wraps around me in a cloud of relaxation. Harsher sounds add a counterpoint while trickling notes shiver and bend above chords that illuminate the track. Swelling strength grows as flickering tones spin with the lightness of a zephyr, building atmosphere and depth.
The main melody is haunting and slips forward with unmoored feeling as hollow tones rise with more dynamic energy and the drum beat continues to shape the music. Technological-sounding notes form a pattern that sings out with deep peace. Trickling tones spangle as the lead synth melody cries out with mingled ethereality and sharp-edged robotic emotion before silence falls.
A faraway synth slides with complete gentleness as colossal bass expands to open “Last Stop.” The lead synth melody evokes completion and caring, giving me the sense of being embraced by a loved one. Towering drums add shape while the brilliant lead synth wraps me in sweet compassion, carrying me into a place of cradling warmth. The rhythm is solid and rebounds with forward motion before trembling notes evoke the soft brush of fingers on skin, reassuring and intimate.
Slow arpeggios ripple like waves of light as higher notes create a prismatic effect and the drums add a gentle pulsation while the main melody unfurls with repose and emotional fulfillment. I imagine the main character finally at rest after his long journey, able to share quiet time with the one he cares for deeply.
Conclusion
“Paragon” voyages freely across the vast reaches of space, reflecting a character who wants to return home after years of questing and battles. The storytelling and cinematic nature of the music draws me deeper into the atmosphere and story of the album, keeping me intrigued.
Synth Single Review: “In the Silence” by Valley Lights
by Karl Magi
Valley Lights’ “In the Silence” is a journey from despair to fulfillment. The song begins as an arpeggio spins with minor-key shadow, like darkness between street lights at night. Nightmarepaint’s guitar melody slides past like a lonely car on an empty road while string-like notes glisten before Valley Lights’ voice carries a haunting melody. Michael Oakley and Missing Words’ production is nuanced and emotive on this track.
The rhythm presses forward as the vocals cry out with emotion that moves from brokenness to completion and after orchestral hits, the pumping beat creates motivational positivity. Valley Lights’ voice adds a resonant expression that drives the song’s message home. Flickering notes resemble headlights cutting through nocturnal darkness while the minor-key vocal melody reflects pain and emptiness before positivity returns.
The chorus is supported by a choir that adds worshipful gentleness as the vocals rise with uplift and encouragement. As Valley Lights encapsulates a welter of feeling in the lyrics, the main melody twists with majestic melancholy while the disco-inflected beat shimmies. String hits add a symphonic quality and Valley Lights’ soulful vocal performance brings the song to a powerful and emotional close.
“I was a shadow on the pavement, talking loud but never seen,” the narrator confesses, explaining how every mirror was a stranger and each night was a repeated routine. When lights sliced through the silence and the song’s subject’s reflection caught his eye, “then the world was brighter and I knew the reason why.”
Deep in despair, the storyteller had been lost, but the moment he saw the song’s subject he understood, “all my life I’ve waited here for you, in the silence, through the pain I knew,” waiting for “a moment brighter than the emptiness I knew.”
“I was a prisoner of my own mind, falling short of who I am,” he admits, describing streets as fading memories and each night as a broken plan. He concludes with the realization that “your eyes cut through the silence, like a memory I misplaced. Every step was moving nowhere till I saw your face.”
