Synth Single Review: Al Corley’s “Square Rooms” covered by Ferrari Kid & Electrochongo
by Karl Magi
Ferrari Kid & Electrochongo’s cover of Al Corley’s “Square Rooms” explores isolation, disillusionment and hope for human connection as an insistent, razor-sharp bass pulse mingles with a clear, sunlit melody and crisp drums. Melodically, there is an evocation of hope leavened by tragedy, while Electrochongo’s voice slips with velvety ease.
All of the hurt and emptiness are reflected by the vocals, reaching me with their depth of feeling. Radiant synth lines carry the melody with sharpness and finesse while the twisting tones slide above the unending percussive throb. Affection and loss combine with the moonlit synth as Electrochongo’s voice captures thoughtful yearning and a question about a society stripping us of meaning.
Balancing the questioning tone, tender feelings add humanity. Pulsating energy presses on while Ferrari Kid's synth adds to the emotional weight pouring from the vocals as percussion rushes. The music closes with sweeping notes, slicing bass and plaintive vocals.
The opening lines describe a character stripped of illusions, openly carrying sadness while wondering if love and the world itself have grown isolating and empty. He’s deeply aware of his loneliness and despair.
The line about people not listening or caring emphasizes alienation and society’s ignorance of suffering. His narrative begins to move from despair toward intimacy. A long walk clears his vision, helping him to gain clarity and find emotional insight.
Now he moves from the cold outside world to a deeply personal connection: “just you and me until the end of time.” His words and illusions fail, but the relationship remains meaningful. To conclude, he realizes that loneliness still exists, but genuine connection offers a form of escape from “square rooms.”
Synth Single Review: “Philos” by Dominus Lux
by Karl Magi
Dominus Lux’s “Philos” moves through diffuse warmth and affection as a melodic line produces misty sensations of peaceful longing, sliding above a trembling well of feeling. Subtle shades of contemplation and dandelion-seed floating move as rhythmic weight establishes itself. A hazy smoothness ripples from notes that glitter like a sinking sun, exhaling a cloud of tranquility.
Layer upon layer of luxurious sound cascades into a patterned whole, washing in a tide of ringing tones. Fragile notes trace with delicate elegance, carrying my soul into a space of calm and caring. Impressions of a profound and loving connection reflect from the glistening melody. Percussive motion adds a layer of support to vibrating notes dripping with indigo relaxation.
Like a noctilucent cloud, a sheeny synth glows, as notes fall like soft midnight rain. Waves of power move from below while higher tones generate a feeling of delicate, tentative motion before a quiet veil descends.
Synth Single Review: “Lost in the Stars” by Scandroid
by Karl Magi
Scandroid’s “Lost in the Stars” glows with intergalactic love as it undulates into life with nebular radiation. Klayton’s vocals rise in a crescendo to move with overwhelming walls of bass and speeding percussion. Massive power spills from a synth underpinned by a charging guitar before fierce feeling seizes Klayton’s voice. Cosmically twisting notes intertwine with the flying chorus, climbing with unstoppable excitement while the prismatic synth light mixes with the raging guitar.
A feeling of affection and all of the majesty of space fills my heart, expressed by Klayton’s gripping performance. As the starlight-drenched chorus leaps, rhythmic dynamism rips from chugging guitar and battering beats, contrasting with ethereal tonal patterns floating through. Vocals become muffled as crushing low-end strength swells and the chorus vaults upward before the song ends.
Galactic light illuminates the storyteller's spaceship as it is “drifting through an endless night.” Far away starlight gleams, but their home is far off. “Every star holds a memory suspended on strings of time” which bind his heart and mind to the song’s subject. “We are lost in the stars, no matter how far, we'll never be apart,” despite there being no sign of a beginning or an ending.
As they float on a “stream of light,” stars like “tears of a million suns surround us in the night.” Our storyteller asks the song’s subject to make a wish on every one. Their heartbeats “echo side by side, absorbed in a warm embrace.” Crackling with electricity, common threads connect them through time and space.
Synth Single Review: “The Lost Pyramid” by The Blue Book Project
by Karl Magi
The Blue Book Project’s “The Lost Pyramid” exudes enigmatic mystery as hypnotizing note patterns fall enigmatically across a field of bass. Tones reflect interdimensional radiance flash while drums march in thoughtful lines. Impressions of deep time and ancient knowledge are carried in metallic notes, echoing with shimmering gentleness. A journey into strangeness and shadow unfolds with the haunting melodic refrain, suffused with all of the eldritch power of unknown civilizations.
As the melody shivers, I am drawn in and suddenly excited by the rising energy that erupts from intensely accelerating percussion. As iridescent notes jump and fly, images of a journey across transdimensional space fill my mind while the melody captures the dynamic thrill of travel at exhilarating velocity. Meditation returns with steadily circling synth breathing out while images of structures obscured by time and full of forgotten wisdom permeate me. The track closes into introspective contemplation.
